Why cheap and cheerful living?

Eleven years ago I had credit card debt, not much saved, a 12 year old car that would need to be replaced eventually and a million excuses why I hadn't set up an IRA. Today I've been debt free for ten years, when I replaced my car five years ago I paid cash for a late model used car, I fund my Roth to the max every year in January with savings from the previous year, a few months ago I bought a condo and paid cash at closing. Now my monthly housing expenses are less than what I had been paying for rent. Did I win the lottery? Nope. I got serious about money and living below my means. Living like I had retired and was relying on social security and saving the excess. If you say to youself "I could never live on social security" I hope you have a lot of acorns stashed in your hollow tree because you're going to need them. My biggest fear was becoming a bag lady. Now that I have my own paid-for home, the bag lady fear is gone from my life.
